Fitzgerald aims for silverware
August 29, 2008
Davy Fitzgerald will aim to secure the first part of an All-Ireland double this weekend as his Clare Minor Camogie side take on Kilkenny in the Minor A Final on Sunday. The Waterford manager will also face Kilkenny next weekend in the All-Ireland Hurling Final but this weekend his focus is on defeating the Minor Cats with his Clare side.
Fitzgerald is joint manager of the side with Fintan McNamara, a team who have reached an All-Ireland Minor Camogie Final for the fist time. McNamara is first person to acknowledge the contribution that the former All-Ireland winner has made. "We're very grateful to have Davy Fitzgerald involved with us, he's a fantastic motivator and inspiration to the girls.
"I think there's a couple of reasons for this, as a manager he has reached the biggest game you can and it's still only his debut season with Waterford. Also being a Clare man, the girls sit up and listen to him, he's achieved everything you can as a player so the girls know when he talks, it's the truth and anything he says could help them in winning an All-Ireland," McNamara said.
Clare take on a Kilkenny side who are renowned for their underage set-up and are hoping to win their third All-Ireland minor title in a row. However Camogie in Clare has made huge strides over the past few years and seven of the Minor side will feature for the Junior team that will play Offaly in the Gala All-Ireland Final in Croke Park on September 14th.
McNamara knows the quality of the opposition his side faces but is confident they can write Clare Camogie history on Sunday. "We have to give Kilkenny a tremendous amount of respect, they're an institution at this stage in the sport at every underage level. They are going for, I think, three All-Irelands in a row now, so any team that does that deserves a massive amount of respect. Saying that, we're not going into the game just to roll over either, we're a very good team and we're more than confident of winning an All-Ireland."
The All-Ireland Minor B Camogie Final between Offaly and Waterford also takes place on Sunday in Athy. The Offaly side also feature in a Minor Camogie final for the first time and can rely on the experience of six players who will take to the field for the Junior Final in Croke Park in two weeks.
