Leinster U20HC: Cody and Brassil shoot Cats into decider

Kilkenny's Eoin Cody celebrates his goal against Galway at O'Connor Park

Kilkenny 1-19
Galway 1-15

Kilkenny are through to the Leinster U20 hurling championship final after seeing off Galway with four points to spare in Tullamore this evening.

DJ Carey’s side led by four points at the break and all but put the issue to bed in the 43rd minute when Eoin Cody netted for the Cats as they went on to open up an eight-point margin.

The Tribesmen had seized the early advantage but never led by more than a single point in the opening 10 minutes, as the victors kept in touch with frees from Niall Brassil before eventually moving in front through a James Brennan point in the 13th minute.

The scoreboard soon read 0-8 to 0-4 in Kilkenny’s favour as Cody and Brassil raised back-to-back white flags and they’d add to their tallies to leave it at 0-11 to 0-7 for the break, with two Mark Kennedy frees and a fine over from John Fleming keeping the trailers in touch.

Kilkenny saw a goal chance from Aaron Brennan brilliantly stopped by Darach Fahy eight minutes into the restart, but the Galway custodian couldn’t keep the next one out from Cody.

The young Ballyhale star raced through after claiming a puck out and rifled home to all but kill off this semi-final with a little over a quarter of an hour left on the clock.

Galway had two goal chances of their own stopped by Dean Mason in the Cats’ goal before Sean Neary eventually hit the net for them.

It proved too little, too late however as Brassil (0-7), Cody (1-3) and Sean Carey (0-3) all brought up their respective tallies to ensure their county a shot at provincial glory against MJ Reck’s Wexford side, who defeated Offaly last night.
