HL1A: Spirited second-half display secures quarter-final spot for Wexford

March 10, 2019

Wexford's Rory O'Connor with Paddy Deegan of Kilkenny

Wexford overturned a five-point half time deficit to advance to the quarter-final stage of the Allianz HL Division 1 at Kilkenny’s expense in Innovate Wexford Park today.

The Model County ran out 1-19 to 1-12 winners to set up a last eight date with Galway and consign the reigning champions to a relegation play-off battle with Cork.

Substitute Cathal Dunbar’s 67th minute goal was the icing on the cake of a stirring second-half performance by Davy Fitzgerald’s charges.

They had trailed by 0-8 to 1-10 at the change of ends having played against the elements in the opening period.

Liam Blanchfield had given Brian Cody’s side the perfect start with an early goal but, as events transpired, a five-point cushion wasn’t sufficient to sustain them in the second-half.

All the visitors could muster in response to the Model County’s comeback was two points.

Jack O’Connor top scored for the winners with 0-6 (one from play) while Rory O’Connor and Lee Chin contributed three points apiece.

Kilkenny’s woes were compounded when Conor Delaney was shown a red card in stoppage time.
