Henry Shefflin’s smooth transition from the player to manager has come as no surprise to Brian Cody.

‘King Henry’ has guided Ballyhale Shamrocks to Kilkenny and Leinster SHC titles in his first year in the bainisteoir bib and is aiming to plot the downfall of Ballygunner in today’s All-Ireland Club SHC semi-final at Semple Stadium (5pm).

Speaking to the Irish Independent yesterday at the announcement that Glanbia are extending their sponsorship of the Cats for another three years, his former boss Cody said: “He was a leader on the field for us, a leader in every single way.

“He wasn't necessarily a player who'd be shouting and roaring in the dressing-room, but he spoke with authority and spoke with sense as well.”

He added: “His hurling brain was supreme, he never had to look to the sideline to be told to do this or that.

“He's on a good run and we'll see how they go this weekend.”
