Cian O'Neill was adamant that Cathal McNally's late disallowed goal in Kildare's defeat to Westmeath was legitimate.

Trailing by three points at the time, the Lilywhites thought they had salvaged something from a dismal display when McNally finished to the net, only for it to be disallowed for a foul by Tommy Moolick on Westmeath goalkeeper Darren Quinn.

"For me, it's a totally legitimate goal, the 'keeper actually dropped it before there was any contact. It's a big call and as I was saying during the match at one stage, whatever about the small calls, let's get the big ones right. I'd like to look at it again, but from looking at it on the big screen, I thought it was shocking," the Kildare manager complained.

O'Neill, who admitted to being 'devastated' by the loss, also argued that James Dolan's 48th minute goal - which brought Westmeath level - should have been disallowed.

"The goal I was very disappointed with on two levels. I thought Niall (Kelly) was fouled, two times, and I could be wrong, but that was just my interpretation at the time. But then we didn't contain it and that was disappointing because we haven't actually conceded a goal in several matches now between challenges and Wexford.

"That was a real turning point for them now."
