Cian O'Neill expressed satisfaction with Kildare's first half performance against Westmeath.

However, he wasn't so happy with their second half display when favoured by the strong wind in Mullingar.

"Coming in at half-time we were very happy to be leading by four points (2-6 to 0-8) as the conditions were particularly bad," the new Kildare boss said after his side's winning start in Division 3 of the Allianz League.

"Unfortunately, we weren't as effective in the second half when we had the wind with us. Two league points are good to have, but what we learned from the last 15 minutes where we made life too difficult for ourselves unnecessarily - that's the big take-home message from today."

His opposite number Tom Cribbin - who plotted his native county's downfall in the corresponding fixture last year - reflected: "We probably tried a bit too hard for goals near the end, but against a very strong breeze in the second half we held it to three points each, and I was very happy overall with the lads' effort and commitment."
