Kildare's hopes of redeeming themselves in the championship have been dealt a blow with the news that Keith Cribbin has ruptured his cruciate ligament.

Cribbin could be out of action for up to a year after suffering the injury whilst playing for Johnstownbridge against Athy last weekend.

Selector Morgan O'Callaghan admits the injury is a setback for the Lilywhites as they seek to put their second successive league relegation behind them in next month's Leinster SFC quarter-final against Laois.

"Unfortunately, our worst fears about Keith Cribbin's knee injury have come to pass and he is due to have cruciate ligament surgery next month," O'Callaghan said in the Irish Sun.

"So Keith is out of the entire championship and it will probably be the best part of 12 months before he gets back playing football again. He might get back training in about six months' time, but with all the rehab that is necessary after cruciate operations, we mightn't see Keith in the Kildare jersey again until next year's championship."

On the plus side, both Daryl Flynn and Cathal McNally are back to full fitness after undergoing ankle and groin surgery respectively during the winter period.
