Performance disappoints Lawlor

Kildare manager Brian Lawlor felt his players took Wicklow for granted slightly in last weekend's Kehoe Cup defeat.

Having looked impressive in their win over Maynooth a week earlier, Kildare were strong favourites to see off the Garden County at Hawkfield last Sunday.

However, Wicklow produced a decent display to earn the win by a solitary point and Lawlor explained to the Leinster Leader that the performance wasn't good enough by his charges.

"It was a huge step-up. Maybe we were in a false sense of security after last week's victory over Maynooth, but that was a proper intensity match," stated Lawlor.

"But we came up short and we are very disappointed. We played well enough in patches but we would be disappointed that we, particularly in the first half, weren't in a better position at half-time."

He added: "It's not that we are mad to win the Kehoe Cup - of course we would love to win some silverware at any time of the season, but the main thing was that getting to the Kehoe Cup final would have guaranteed us an extra competitive game on February 8th which we now won't have."
