Ref injured in club match

August 15, 2014

Maybe it time for referees to wear helmets.
A Kildare intermediate hurling championship match had to be abandoned last night after the referee suffered a nasty eye injury.

The IHC clash between Naas and Kill was 24 minutes old when referee Ray Kelly was accidentally struck in the eye by the sliotar.

Having received treatment on the field following the incident, Kelly was unable to continue and had to be removed to hospital.

For the record, Naas were leading the match by 1-04 to 0-02 when the accident occurred and it raises the question should referees be wearing helmets when officiating at hurling games?
