U14 girls defeat Wexford

Kildare came out on top in a well fought encounter against Wexford in Gorey on Saturday. Wexford opened the scoring with a point after 3 minutes. Kildare responded well with a goal by Nanci Murphy after a fine solo run. They continued to pile on the pressure and Aoibheann O'Gorman pointed after the ball came off the crossbar from a shot by Nessa Dooley. Kildare were quite dominant in this period and were attacking frequently from midfield, although the Wexford defence stood firm and managed to withstand a number of these attacks. Nanci Murphy converted a point after some good support work by Lara Curran. Soon after Kildare were awarded a free on the edge of the box. Lara Curran blasted to the net for a great goal to leave Kildare 2-2 to 1 point.ahead. Wexford, spurred on mainly by the industrious Rachel Bennett, began to increasingly run at the Kildare defence and came close a number of times. However it was Kildare who got the next score with a well taken point by Neasa Dooley after a great solo run from Lara Curran. A few minutes later Neasa added a goal to her increasing score tally when she finished a fine move that included some excellent support play from Maria Doyle and Sorcha Gillman. Wexford persevered however and their efforts were rewarded when their pressure gained them a penalty from which Emily Coakley scored a powerful goal. The half finished in Kildares favour when Neasa Dooley once again found the net after some fine work from Caoimhe Maher.
In the second half Wexford started very well and Ann Marie Bennett scored a very good goal from the edge of the box. This was followed soon after with another goal that began from a free on the 45 meter line. However Kildare hit back with a point from Lara Curran and a goal from Neasa Dooley. Wexford replied with another goal scored by Ciara Bridges after an excellent solo run by Emily Coakley. The action was going end to end and Kildare soon replied with further scores. Sarah Doyle scored a goal and point and Sorcha Gillman added another after a great passing movement with Nanci Murphy. Emma Doolan scored a point from a free after she herself had been fouled. The scoring was rounded off by a Sarah Doyle goal after a pass from Emma Doolan. This ended a game that was quite physical at times and resulted in a number of injuries to Kildare players, in particular, Ciara Farrell, Madeline Harney, and Emma Kielty. The final score was Wexford 4-02.Kildare 8-07. Next game for Kildare is against Meath.
