It's the end of an era in Kildare as Johnny Doyle has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The veteran forward confirmed the news to local radio station KFM this evening, citing family commitments as his reason. The 37-year-old's retirement comes after Kildare manager Jason Ryan had announced in February that he would be on board for another season.

Regarded as one of the top forwards of his generation, Doyle made his debut in 2000 when Kildare last won the Leinster senior football championship. He won an All Star in 2010 after the Lilywhites were desperately unlucky to miss out on a place in the All-Ireland final, and also captained his county to an Allianz League Division 2 title in 2012.

At club level, he won a Kildare SFC medal with Allenwood in 2004, and was the Kildare Footballer of the Year in 2004 and '05. He also represented Ireland in the International Rules series last year.
