O'Neill hooks up with Rebels

Kildare boss Cian O'Neill

Former Kildare manager Cian O’Neill has been appointed coach of the Cork senior footballers.

O’Neill, who is employed at Cork Institute of Technology, will join manager Ronan McCarthy and selectors Gary O'Halloran and Sean Hayes in the Leeside think-tank as the Rebels aim to build on their impressive 2019 championship campaign. The fact that he previously coached arch rivals Kerry adds an extra layer of interest.

Former Stade Français employee Kevin Smith is also joining Cork as strength and conditioning coach. Cork GAA released the following statement this afternoon regarding the appointments:

“We are delighted to welcome Cian on board given his extensive experience as former Kildare manager, as a former coach to a number of senior intercounty teams in both football and hurling and of course, as Head of Department of Sports, Leisure and Childhood Studies at Cork Institute of Technology.

“Also, joining the Senior Football management team as S&C coach will be Kevin Smith, working under newly appointed High Performance manager Aidan O'Connell. Kevin is a former head of S&C at Stade Français Rugby Club and is currently completing a PhD at Cork Institute of Technology.”
