Unlike what seems to be the general consensus of many inter-county managers, Kildare bainisteoir David Herity is adamant that the players going back to the clubs for a few weeks can only benefit them.
Herity reveals in the Leinster Leader that the squad will train together this week before being released back to the clubs where they will play a number of league matches, plus a championship game.
There has been great debate over the county v. club situation, but Herity has obviously taken a leaf of his former manager Brian Cody’s book by releasing the players to their clubs as often as possible.
“We’ve 30 lads on the panel and we have gotten to see 26 of them throughout this league campaign; some lads have been ruled out long term owing to injuries,” said Herity.
“But the players will spend another week with us before they are released back to their clubs, where they will play four league games and one championship game, so it will be a great time for those lads who have been injured so far to get some game time into them, which is exactly what they need.
“All the players need to get back to club level and drive it on, to lead by example and set the standards at club level and then bring that back into the county scene but it is key over the next few weeks for those who have had limited game time in the league, if any, to get back to their clubs and get playing time under their belts in order for us to have a 30-strong panel there where everyone is fighting for just the 15 jerseys available for the Roscommon (Christy Ring opener) game.”
