Tax breaks imminent for intercounty players

Elite players are in line for some welcome tax exemptions to ensure that they are not left out of pocket by their GAA commitments.
Proposals from Minister For Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin would see athletes who also work compensated in the form of tax allowances. This would include intercounty GAA players as well as Olympic athletes, who regularly lose personal money due to their sporting pursuits.
Kerry TD Griffin is adamant that no amateur sportsman should be impoverished by their dedication to sport and has proposed the tax breaks to ensure that this is no longer the case:
"Let's say you have somebody who is in a job where they have to work 30 hours a week or 40 hours a week [as well as] their sport just to pay bills," he told The Sunday Business Post.
"What I am saying is, if an athlete is at a certain level, perhaps there would be an income tax exemption at a certain point for such an athlete or their PRSI class would be such that they would have a special PRSI class."
