Kavanagh, Dan

January 31, 2008
The Late Dan Kavanagh Dan Kavanagh died peacefully at his home in Muckross, Killarney following a brief illness. A native of Dun Chain in West Kerry, Dan Kavanagh was one of the last surviving members of the Kerry team that lost to Cavan in the 1947 All-Ireland final, which was played in the Polo Grounds, New York. This was the only All-Ireland final to be played outside Ireland. Kavanagh won one All-Ireland senior football championship medal for Kerry, when he helped the County to success in the 1946 decider against Roscommon. Dan partnered Gus Cremin in the drawn game at midfield, but lined out at corner forward in the replay. Dan also had the rare distinction of playing against his native County in an All-Ireland final, when he lined out with Galway against Kerry in the 1941 decider, but the Tribesmen where defeated by a narrow one point margin. He also won County Honours with the great Dingle side in 1944, Killarney 1949 and with Dick Fitzgeralds in 1951. Dan, who was a civil engineer by profession, resided in Killarney for many years, where he served Dr Crokes club loyally and faithfully and was vice-president of the Club at the time of his death. His son, Donal and grandson, Eanna have worn the black and amber of Crokes with pride. To Dan's wife Nellie, children Siobhan, Seán, Donal, Catherine and Eileen, grandchildren, great grandchildren, relatives and many friends, we extend out deepest sympathies.
