Broderick, Patrick

November 30, 2005
The Late Patrick Broderick The sudden passing of Patrick Broderick from Knockane, Brosna, has been deeply mourned by the entire community, where his contribution will be long remembered. Born in August 1933, Patrick, known locally as Patie Brouder, was the youngest of Michael Broderick's five children. His mother Nora (nee Curtin) died when he was born and Patie was brought up by an aunt Maggie and her husband Mikey O'Connell. Following Mikey's example he had a great respect and love for the land from a young age. In his younger days he was a member of the Brosna drama group under the direction of Father Tom Hickey and travelled near and far treading the boards. In October 1965 he married his childhood sweetheart Nora Lenihan from Mountcollins. They had three daughters, Noreen, Liz and Margaret, and one son Patrick. One of Patie's great passions was the GAA. He was chairman of Brosna GAA club at the time the pitch was renovated. During the championship season his Sundays were devoted to football and hurling, and neighbours often overheard him listening to Weeshie Fogarty on Radio Kerry. A long time member of Fine Gael, for whom he canvassed, there was a large party turnout at his funeral. A regular mass goer, he had a strong involvement in the Brosna card club and Monday night's card game was the highlight of his week. His funeral mass was celebrated on November 29 after which he was buried in Mountcollins graveyard. He is survived by his wife Nora, daughters Noreen, Liz and Margaret, son Patrick, son-in-law James (Kelly), grandchildren, brother Mossie, sisters Julia, Norrie and Breda, nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandnephews, relatives and a wide circle of friends. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of The Kerryman
