The Late Dan Joe Murphy
Dan Joe Murphy who died at the young age of 46 on Wednesday March 16, was a much loved figure in his native Kilmorna and neighbouring Duagh, among whose greatest passions was the training of the Duagh Junior football team.
Mr Murphy died in Cork University Hospital after a short illness.
His death came as a shocking blow to the community he loved so dearly.
Born in Pilgrim Hill, Kilmorna, to Ned and Janie Murphy, he was one of five children alongside siblings Kathleen, Nora, Marie and Pat.
His first years of schooling were spent in Islandanny National School until its closure, when he made the move to Duagh National School.
He was then educated in Abbeyfeale Technical College and pursued a tool-making apprenticeship course afterwards.
Several years were subsequently spent working as a barman in England until the death of his father in 1981, when Mr Murphy returned to look after the family farm.
He threw himself into the family trade. He took up a position with Coillte many years later and worked in the building industry prior to his death.
Possessed of a great sense of humour and warm approach to others, Mr Murphy had many friends and his funeral in Duagh was one of the biggest seen in the locale in some time.
He was a regular at Christy's The Well Bar in Listowel where he loved to discuss one of his greatest loves football.
It was a love he had all his life and one that Mr Murphy put most obviously into practice with his dedication to the Duagh Junior football team.
Irish music was another of his great passions and he attended fleadh cheoils the length and breadth of the country in pursuit of his favourite sounds.
Coillte his favoured dog and companion, was a very important figure in Mr Murphy's life in recent years and one he cared for with great love.
His companionship with his pet illustrated all his boundless generosity and warm spirit which won him many friends throughout the years.
