McElligott, John Joe

July 31, 2004
The late John Joe McElligott Listowel was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of John Joe McElligott from Bunaghara. He was a 'gentle giant' who was well-known and loved by many in North Kerry, according to his good friend Christy Walsh. John Joe was a person who never failed to give generously - Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin was one beneficiary of his good work. "We're completely shocked by it," Christy Walsh told The Kerryman. "He was a great friend - if you were going through a bad patch or had any problems at all he was always there for you," he said. He was a favourite with the many Kerry supporters who travel regularly from Christy's for the matches. "We would often have a hundred people travelling by bus from the bar and they all knew him well, young and old. "Indeed, he was with us for the Munster Final last Sunday," Christy explained. John Joe was very much looking forward to Sunday's replay as he had a particular fondness for the Killarney venue and always enjoyed travelling there. He is survived by his mother and three sisters. There were no definite funeral arrangements as The Kerryman went to print. Courtesy of The Kerryman July 2004
