Austin Stack Park will be out of commission for a year while the facility is upgraded.

Delegates at Monday night's Kerry county committee meeting in the town were told that the Tralee facility will close for approximately one year from the end of May until next March / April.

Major refurbishment work that'll take place at the grounds includes resurfacing of the pitch, which will be upgraded to a sand-based surface, plus the installation of new floodlights.

Chairman Patrick O'Sullivan told The Kerryman that the move is necessary to bring the in-demand venue up to the required standards:

"When we had to move the league match with Derry from Tralee to Killarney last year because of the condition of the pitch due to weather, we knew that something substantial would have to be done with it because it was taking too much pressure from the winter weather and the amount of times it was being used.

"The bulbs for the floodlighting are also not adequate anymore and we will source better lighting while the pitch is out of action."
