Murphy: goalkeeping role has evolved

Former Kerry keeper and present day selector Diarmuid Murphy
Kerry selector Diarmuid Murphy says goalkeepers now need to be good footballers too.

Murphy, who won four All-Irelands between the sticks for the Kingdom, points out that the duties of the No.1 have moved on from merely minding the net and that distribution has become increasingly important:

"Look at a lot of the guys playing inside in goals across all counties and they are good footballers," he notes in The Irish Daily Star.

"The number-one job inside in the goal is keep the ball out of the goal and probably the number-one task in hand, but restarts now are huge.

"It's very important and ever since I stopped playing in '09, I think the big change has been the kick-out from the 14.

"In the past, the kick-out was from the edge of the square or the 21 and it wasn't impossible but it was much more difficult to get a gameplan going when you were taking kick-outs from three different spots.

"It's easier now to get a gameplan going and open up the whole pitch if he has a good kicker, and the tee has made a big difference too."
