Kerry Ladies Football News
April 22, 2014
It was a busy week on the underage inter county front with all Kerry underage ladies teams in actions. On Wednesday in Kilcummin our U16 team were up against a very strong Cork team in the Munster U16 A Semi final. Cork with the wind advantage blitzed Kerry early on & it took a while for the young Kerry girls to get to grips with the game. Kerry were at a disadvantage from the get go with a few players unable to play due to international soccer commitments & injury & this was compounded with an injury to key forward Ciara Griffin early in the game. Kerry were down half time 2-04 Cork to Kerry 0-02. But the team have a never say die attitude & they battled to get within 2 points of the Rebel side. However Cork sensing danger & with superior fitness they pulled away in the end, with the scoreline flattering them as Kerry throw everything into attack. Final score Kerry 2-04 Cork 4-13. On Saturday both our U14 & Minor teams were in action. On Saturday morning our U14's defeated Waterford in Bishopstown to earn a Munster U14 A Final spot against Cork. Kerry were in control of this game from start to finish, despite a wobbly period in 15 mins of the second half. Aoife O'Callaghan hit 2 goals from the penalty spot as Waterford found it difficult the Kerry forwards. The Munster Final against Cork will take place on May 3rd best of luck to the team.

Unfortunately on Saturday our Minors effectively bowed out of the Munster Minor A Competition with a defeat to a very experienced Tipperary side. The game played in Bansha was a tough fixture for the Kingdom, with the Premier side boasting players who have contested numerous school finals all year giving them more game exposure. Kerry's defence struggled with the pace & quick movement of players & of the ball by the Tipp side & went in at half time down 1-10 to 0-5. Kerry however did have 2 goal chances but failed to convert. Kerry regrouped in the second half & with some fresh legs threw all they had at Tipperary. However it was not enough, full time Tipperary 2-16 Kerry 1-12. Kerry will be looking at results of other games to decide our feat.
Our senior team face Cork in the semi final of the Tesco HomeGrown National League on Sunday at 2 pm in Drom/Broadford. Kerry in their first year back of the top flight of the league finished the group stages on top in an impressive campaign which resulted in just 1 defeat at the hands of Dublin. Cork however have had a disappointing campaign so far but Cork are experienced campaigners & will see this as a chance to reboot their season. This will be combative game as both teams will be eager to lay down a marker for the championship season ahead. Kerry defence have been extremely tight & will need to be up against Cork's Valerie Mulcahy, Doireann O'Sullivan & co. Midfield will hopefully be our platform as Bernie Breen Capt & Emma Sherwood have formed a formidable partnership, on which we hope to launch many attacks from on Sunday. Probably the game of the season so far & hopefully a Kerry win.
Due to all our inter county teams in action we had limited action in the domestic front, with just the Glebe Kitchens U12 Co League preliminary rd completing a full round of games. In the Rhyno Quality Feeds Div 1 Southern Gaels had a comprehensive victory over Castleisland Desmonds. As did Inbhear Sceine Gaels over Listowel Emmetts. In Div 2 an exciting game took place between Finuge/St Senans & Corca Dhuibhne with the West Kerry side just winning by the slimmest of margins 1pt. Na Gaeil with a tour de force performance from Marie Quirke were comprehensive winners against Rathmore. In Div 3 Currow inflicted a demoralising defeat on a weakened Miltown/Listry. While in the Killarney Derby Dr Crokes & Spa battled it out in the top of the table clash, with the Crokes coming out on top by just 3 points. In Div 4 Glenflesk inflicted a heavy defeat on Beale. While Fossa travelled to Duagh & in an exciting close game won by 3 points. Next round will take place on weekend of 4th May. The first round of the Féile 2014 took place on Easter Sunday, with Listowel Emmetts & Austin Stacks coming through the preliminary. Commiserations to Ballyduff & Miltown/Listry. The second round takes place on April 26th. As part of the Kerry ladies commitment to player development, U12 Development Squads will commence on Saturday in various venues across the county, all details will be posted on the website etc. This is for players registered with clubs.
