Ring Cup is Kingdom's main target

Kerry manager Eamonn Kelly wasn't making an issue of the controversial rule which denied the Division 2A champions promotion to Division 1B.

Speaking after the Kingdom lost Saturday night's promotion / relegation playoff to Offaly, Kelly said: "I suppose you could hang on that, but from our point of view our aim this year was to try and win the Christy Ring. We never actually targeted winning the league. We got on a run and we built on it. We were thrilled to be crowned league champions last week.

"But I think for Kerry hurling we now know what's required to hurl in the next level and that's where we need to go to. Try and win the Christy Ring and build on it from there, then we try and make the step into 1B."

The Tipperary man admitted that the decision to play seven defenders cost Kerry at the other end of the field.

"We set up with seven at the back to give us a chance so that they wouldn't get a run on us," he explained.

"But the five forward weren't able to stay going at the pace that was required."
