Ferris, Gerard

May 31, 2012
Gerard (Gerry) Ferris, Swords and formerly of Listry, Killarney died suddenly in Sligo Regional Hospital on May 10th.
The son of Cornelius and Abina Ferris (nee Nolan), Listry Cross, Milltown, Gerard was born on October 10th 1935. His parent were shopkeepers at Listry Cross and his brother D Ferris ran the shop until the late 1970s. Gerard's father was the manager in the local creamery. They were very well-known in the locallity and Gerard was a member of the local GAA club. He was educated in Rockwell College and then trained as a psychiatric nurse in St Ita's Hospital in Portrane, Co. Dublin. He later trained as an occupational therapist and worked in this area until his retirement in 2000.
It was in St Ita's that Gerard met his wife-to-be Lynda. She was also a psychiatric nurse. They had two daughters Abina (Dublin)and Geraldine (Leitrim).
Lynda sadly died in September 2009 and Gerard never really recovered from the shock of losing her.
Gerard was a dedicated family man and was adored by his loving daughters and five grandchildren Kevin, Darragh, Fergal, Eve and Ronan. He is sadly missed by his sons-in-law Niall Matthews (Dublin) and John Moran (Leitrim), his brother D and sister-in-law Eileen and by his close friends Mike and Kathleen Foley, Killorglin.
Gerard absolutely adored Kerry and spent every holiday in the Kingdom. He was also a dedicated Kerry supporter and enjoyed many days in Croke Park supporting the Kerry team. He especially adored the team of the '70s and he even managed to convince his two Dublin-born daughters to become avid Kerry fans.
His family would like to thank the many family members and close friends who travelled to Dublin and Leitrim to be with the family at this sad time.
Gerard's funeral Mass was a very moving occasion and a fitting memorial to a man whom so many described as a true gentleman. He was buried with his Kerry flag and a Kerry scarf adorning his coffin as it made its way to his final resting place in Ballyboughal Cemtery.
