Meyler keen to avoid Cork lesson

February 03, 2012

Kerry hurling manager John Meyler
John Meyler has warned his Kerry charges to be on their toes against Cork.

The neighbouring counties are due to meet in tomorrow night's Waterford Crystal Cup quarter-final at Pairc Ui Rinn and Kingdom boss Meyler is wary of the potential of the Rebels - led by his former clubmate Jimmy Barry-Murphy - to run riot if given the chance:

"Cork will teach us a lesson if we don't get at it from the word go," he says in the Examiner.

"It's a good game to have a few weeks out from the start of the league. Cork have played a few challenge matches lately, against UCC and CIT, so it will be very tough but if we are exposed then we will need to learn from that.

"It will give us an indication of just where we are at the start of February. It's important to play these top teams every now and again because you do get an indication of just how good or how bad you are.

"It's Jimmy's first real competitive game with Cork and from what I can gather training has gone very well, they are very fit.

"He has a lot of young players available to him - Conor Lehane, Damien Cahalane and all those - and there are a few of the old stagers still there. They will want to win as well and lay down a marker for the season."
