Sigerson Cup: Cummins inspires easy Sligo win

February 02, 2012
Danny Cummins scored eight points as Sligo IT made light work of IT Tralee at Gurteen yesterday to set up an Irish Daily Mail Sigerson Cup quarter-final meeting with holders UCC.

Sligo IT 1-18
IT Tralee 0-7

In the absence of the injured Mark McHugh, Cummins stepped up to the plate with a superb scoring display which earned him the man of the match award. The writing was on the way for Tralee as early as the seventh minute, by which time Sligo had stormed into a 0-7 to 0-1 lead.

Tralee recovered to trail by only three points - 0-5 to 0-8 - at the break, but they were fortunate to be so close after Sligo full forward Seamus Ryder missed a penalty in stoppage-time.

On the resumption, the winners reeled off seven unanswered points before Damien Kelly finally opened Tralee's second half account. The Kerry side had corner back Eoin Murray sent off on a second yellow card in the 38th minute and their misery was complete when Martin Dunne came off the bench to score the only goal of the game for the runaway winners.
