O'Donoghue, Paudie

July 30, 2008
The Late Paudie O'Donoghue Last week brought the sad news of the death of Paudie O'Donoghue, one of the most identifiable Kerry footballers of his generation, who provided a rock-like presence in the last line of defence during a period that spanned seven All-Ireland final appearances. Two winner's medals came his way in 1969 and 1970. Whether it was with Shannon Rangers in the county championship or lining out at full back with Kerry, the Asdee native always gave off his very best and no easy scores were ever recorded against him. Throughout a long and distinguished career, a period when respect was earned rather than bestowed, his calm persona provided an assurance for supporters who came to appreciate what he stood for. Those qualities included high fielding, sound judgement and an assurance that the Kerry citadel was in safe hands. Pre-deceased by his younger brother Eamon, another stalwart Kerry footballer, Paudie's passing at a comparatively young age is greatly regretted.
