Kerry must put foot to the pedal - Geaney

August 26, 2008
Kerry selector Sean Geaney has said that the Kingdom need to truly kill off teams if they are to avoid results like last Sunday's All-Ireland semi-final draw. Kerry led by eight points with under four minutes of normal time remaining, but the Rebels produced one of the great comebacks to hit 2-2 in the closing stages to salvage a draw of their great rivals. "The lads will know that they just have to finish games better and that when we have a lead we put the foot to the pedal to the very end," said Geaney. Geaney questioned the validity of the penalty awarded to Cork in injury-time which allowed them to draw the game, but did credit the Munster Champions for their comeback nonetheless. "We were six points up, a high ball is hit in and it goes through the goalie's legs unfortunately and then a penalty I'm not too sure about. "Any game you are in the lead, the reaction to be held to a draw is one of disappointment. That said, I felt we played very well during the game. If we had converted our chances we should have been further ahead. "But, you have to give credit to Cork for the comeback. It was just one of those games where we got sucker-punched at the end. We had a chance where we dropped a ball into the goalie's hands, but they came back up and got the first goal from that. Obviously they were going to throw the kitchen sink at us in the last minute." Now the Kingdom coach maintains that his side will have to move on from last weekend's result and focus on getting the job done this Sunday again at Croke Park. "We have to get on with it. At the end of the day we are still in the semi-final. We are still in the same situation."
