A famous Kerry GAA club has elected its first female chairperson.
After serving two years as vice-chairperson, Mairead Fernane succeeded Liam Lynch in the top job at Austin Stacks' recent AGM. Mairead follows in the footsteps of her uncle Dan O'Sullivan, who was the Tralee outfit's first chairman in 1917.
"To be honest, I had no intention of going for the thing on Sunday," she admitted to the Kerryman.
"In fact, I was going to step away from it. I had been asked by a few people over Christmas about taking over from Liam, but I really didn't have any plans for it. Then, at the meeting, a few people held up the picture of my uncle in front of me and I felt I no option.
"But I have to say I'm delighted now that I've taken on the job and I only hope I can repay those people's faith in me to do it."
