Kerry's David Clifford scores a penalty

UCD soccer ace Gary O’Neill says David Clifford could have made the grade in the Premier League – as a centre half!

Kerry-born midfielder O’Neill tasted professional soccer cross channel himself and is convinced that the teenage Kingdom attacker, who slotted four goals in the Super 8s this summer, has all the qualities needed to excel in the eleven-a-side game:

"David Clifford, who is now one of the top footballers in the country, was on my dad's Kennedy Cup team," O'Neill told LOI Weekly. "I think if he really wanted to, he would have gone to England. He was an unbelievable soccer player. He is an absolute animal.

"He is actually different to what he is in GAA: in GAA he is very stylish, in soccer he is a centre half. He is big, strong, physical. He heads it and kicks it. He could have done really good things, I think. He was from a real GAA-dominated area."
