No fewer than eleven Dublin footballers collected their sixth All-Ireland senior football championship medals last weekend.

Stephen Cluxton, James McCarthy, Mick Fitzsimons, Philly McMahon, Darren Daly, Cian O’Sullivan, Michael Darragh MacAuley, Kevin McManamon, Eoghan O’Gara, Paul Flynn and Bernard Brogan all simultaneously entered the record books as Dublin’s most-decorated championship footballers on Sunday when Jim Gavin’s charges saw off Tyrone in the 2018 Sam Maguire Cup decider.

Diarmuid Connolly was also on the 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 all-conquering sides alongside the aforementioned eleven but missed out this year as he opted to spend the summer in Boston, meaning the likes of Dean Rock, Ciaran Kilkenny, Jonny Cooper and Paddy Andrews have now caught up with him.

Before this golden generation of Dublin footballers exploded into the scene, Brian Mullins and Anton O’Toole were the only two men from the capital with four All-Irelands in their back pockets (collected in 1974, 1976, 1977 and 1983). Now, there’s nearly a whole team of them closing in on the record of Kerry’s famous five - Pat Spillane, Mikey Sheehy, Páidí Ó Sé, Ogie Moran and Ger Power – all of whom won eight Celtic Crosses.

At just 28, James McCarthy is best placed to become football’s Henry Shefflin! The Kilkenny ace has 10 senior medals.
