Daly and Cunningham amongst potential Clare candidates

September 22, 2016

Anthony Daly shares a joke with Anthony Cunningham.

Less than 24 hours after Davy Fitzgerald's resignation, some elite names in hurling are being touted as Clare's next senior hurling manager.

Leading the race for potential candidates at this early stage seems to be the Banner County's two-time All-Ireland winning captain Anthony Daly.

Currently the head of Limerick's hurling academy, Daly managed Clare between 2003 and 2006 and went on to take the Dublin reins in 2008, winning the county's first National League title in 72 years before vacating the capital post two years ago.

Donal Og Cusack is also a potential contender, having come on board Fitzgerald's management team as a selector in 2016, while former Galway manager Anthony Cunningham has been keen for a return to the inter-county scene since the player heave which saw him forced out following the Tribesmen's All-Ireland final defeat to Kilkenny last year.

Elsewhere, Gerry O'Connor and Donal Moloney are being tipped as joint-management to succeed Fitzgerald, having guided the county to three All-Ireland U21 titles in a row between 2012 and 2014.

Ger Loughnane is also being mentioned, although the Feakle man is unlikely to give up his media duties with RTE, while Brian Lohan (Wolfe Tones) and John O'Meara (Sixmilebridge) are also thought to be in the running.

Clare county board have yet to indicate when they'll officially begin the process of finding a replacement for Fitzgerald.
