Ryan O'Dwyer has jumped to Ger Cunningham's defence as the the former Cork custodian looks set to be handed a third year at the helm of the Dublin hurlers.

The Tipperary native has a message for the players who turned their back on the team this year - the greater good of Dublin hurling should always comes first.

"Ger had done an awful lot for Dublin hurling. I'm sure he won't please everyone," he remarked to The Irish Daily Star at the launch of the Applegreen Kilmacud Crokes Hurling 7s at Croke Park.

"People that have a problem with Ger - and there are people out there that have a problem with him - if you're working a job and you've a problem with your manager, you get on with it and try harder.

"If you have a manager over an inter-county team and there's a personal issue there or anything like that, you get the head down and get on with it.

"You give everything you can to the cause because at the end of the day we're playing for Dublin hurling.

"We want Dublin hurling to succeed. It's not about 'Oh you want Ryan O'Dwyer to play well'.

"I'd much prefer if I play s**t and Dublin win, and everyone should have that attitude and leave personal grievances or whose gone by or whatever - they can clear off.

"It's the people in the dressing room that matter and the people who want to succeed for Dublin hurling."
