Barry Whelahan has stepped as Offaly camogie manager after just one season in charge.

A statement from the Offaly camogie board today confirmed that the Birr man - who replaced Aidan Franks this time last year - had left the post due to family and work commitments. The Faithful reached this year's Leinster final, only to lose to Kilkenny.

Barry's resignation comes after that of his older brother and fellow Liam MacCarthy Cup winner Brian as Offaly hurling manager earlier this year. Brian has since been replaced by Eamonn Kelly.

The camogie board statement reads: It was with deep disappointment that the Offaly county board received news last week that Barry Whelehan was stepping down as manager of the county senior team after just one year due to family and work commitments.

"The county board on their own behalf and on behalf of all members of the panel wish to extend their appreciation to Barry and his backroom team for their commitment and dedication they gave to Offaly camogie during their year in charge.

"While success eluded them in 2015, on many sessions by the minimum margin, Barry and his team left no stone unturned in their effort to achieve success and it is hoped that whoever is appointed in his place will be in a position to capitalise on the introduction of so many new faces to the panel last year.

"The county board wish to take this opportunity to wish Barry and his management team every good wish for the future and will not forget the contribution they made to progressing camogie in Offaly."
