Players who told Cunningham he wasn't wanted named

Former Galway hurling manager John McIntyre rallies his troops.

Former Galway manager John McIntyre has put his neck on the block by naming the four players who met Anthony Cunningham last week and told him they wanted change.

Writing in the Connacht Tribune, McIntyre - who is sports editor of the Galway weekly newspaper - reveals that Joe Canning, David Burke, David Collins and Andy Smith were the four players who were delegated to tell Cunningham that he was no longer wanted as manager. Despite the players passing a motion of 'no confidence' in the embattled St. Thomas' clubman, he was subsequently ratified for a fifth year by the county board, leading to the current stand-off in the West.

The saga is set to drag on for another week after a meeting between county board officials and the players failed to reach a satisfactory resolution last night.

A former Tipperary hurler, McIntyre managed Galway for three years from 2008 to 2011, and also had two separate spells in charge of Offaly before that.
