Cork's hopes of reviving their All-Ireland challenge have been dealt a serious blow with the news that Shane O'Neill will miss Saturday week's All-Ireland first round qualifier against Wexford.

Selector Johnny Crowley confirmed to the Evening Echo that the Bishopstown defender has been ruled out of the Innovate Wexford Park showdown after suffering an ankle injury in training on Tuesday night.

"Shane has an ankle injury that he got in training and we knew on Tuesday night that he was in trouble," Crowley explained.

"He's a huge loss to us because he's a player of great experience, the type of player that you need going down to Wexford Park on a Saturday night.

"Obviously, it's another huge defensive blow coming on the back of the earlier injury to Christopher Joyce and the subsequent injury sustained by Lorcan McLoughlin.''

Crowley is hopeful that McLoughlin will be able to play some part against the Model County, while he also expects Seamus Harnedy back to lead the attack after he missed the Munster SHC semi-final loss to Waterford.

"Seamus should be okay. He played with his club St Ita's last week in the East Cork JHC and scored a lot of points. He didn't play with UCC last Monday night, but we are confident that he will be okay for Saturday week," he added.
