A disappointing Galway had no answer to Waterford's ruthlessness in today's HL Division 1 quarter-final at Walsh Park.

After securing a return to the top flight courtesy of victory over Wexford last weekend, Derek McGrath's charges now advance to a semi-final showdown with Tipperary after cutting loose on the Tribesmen.

The writing was on the wall for Anthony Cunningham and his team when they trailed by 0-5 to 0-14 at the change of ends and things didn't improve much for them after the resumption.

Stephen Bennett replaced Tom Devine in the Waterford starting 15 while Padraig Mannion was included for Galway at the expense of Greg Lally.

The hosts seized the initiative straight from the throw-in thanks to points from Kevin Moran and Brian O'Halloran and they were four points clear - 0-6 to 0-2 - at the end of the opening quarter of an hour.

Facing a nine point deficit, the Tribesmen needed to produce something special when playing with the wind in the second-half and they were were given a glimmer of hope with two early points.

But it proved to be a false dawn as Galway subsequently went 21 minutes without scoring.
