Derry hurler Liam Hinphey is adamant that the current transfer policy for so called 'weaker teams' should be changed.

Only last week, Kerry acquired two players, one from Clare and the other from Tipperary as they continue their preparations for the NHL and Christy Ring Cup.

One of those players, Patrick Kelly was a member of the Clare All-Ireland winning squad in 2013, while Tipp native James Logue has won All-Ireland medals with the county at minor and under-21 level.

Hinphey feels that Croke Park needs to address this situation and stressed to the County Derry Post that it was making it unfair for youngsters to develop in their own county.

"In terms of hurling development for counties, it does nothing for the counties that are taking advantage of the rule. If you were a 20-year-old looking to break through to the senior team in one of those counties, where do you stand," said Hinphey.

"You're on the edge of a panel and the management just bring in boys from top tier counties instead of utilising their own talent. In terms of true hurling or sports development, the rule that was implemented was counter-productive."
