Ardfert chairman slams timing of U21 final

Kerry U21 hurling decider staged in mid-December.

Ardfert chairman Justin Horgan says it's "a disgrace" that the Kerry U21 hurling decider was staged in mid-December.

After seeing his side beaten by Causeway by 0-18 to 0-9 at Tralee last Sunday, Horgan told The Kerryman:

"I think it's a disgrace, to be dead honest with you. I would have to ask the question: when was the U21 football championship played and I hate to be comparing hurling to football in a footballing county but I think it's a disgrace this time of year, a week before Christmas.

"This competition should be played far earlier in the year when lads are off college, when lads are around for the summer. Half our team are spread around the country and we were having only ten or twelve lads at training - and that's not making excuses for our performance.

"This time leading into Christmas lads have exams and if some lads get injured what do we say to their mothers and fathers? Some are going back to college this evening. Maybe they have exams next week. I think it's very unfair on players to be playing at this time of year."
