Umpire assaulted in Kerry

Bans of one and two years respectively have been proposed for two club hurlers in Kerry arising from an alleged assault on an umpire.

Radio Kerry is reporting that the Kingdom's CCC has come down hard on the two players from the Lady's Walk club in Ballyduff. The suspensions come after umpire Kieran O'Connor was allegedly struck several times with a hurl during the recent Kerry SHL Division 2 final between Causeway and Lady's Walk at Kilmoyley.

Referee Tony McCarthy was forced to abandon the game 10 minutes into the second half after his umpire suffered a broken thumb and soft tissue damage to his shoulder and elbow. The umpire, who also sustained a head injury, reported the incident to Gardai in Listowel.

Lady's Walk club officers are due to meet to decide on whether or not to appeal the huge bans.
