Wexford SHC final: O'Shaughnessy saves Shelmaliers

October 20, 2014

Ciaran O'Shaughnessy - Wexford and Shelmaliers

Shelmaliers 0-13
St. Anne's 1-10

A last-minute Ciaran O'Shaughnessy point earned Shelmaliers a draw with St. Anne's in a hard-fought Wexford SHC final at Wexford Park.

The replay will take place next Sunday and Shels will be delighted to have another chance after St. Anne's had looked to have secured their first title in 14 years. In a frenetic opening, Shels goalkeeper Brian Murphy made two terrific saves, but he couldn't prevent Liam Rochford from lashing the ball to the net at the third time of asking for a second-minute goal.

However, Joe Kelly's frees brought Shels back into it and they trailed by just the minimum, 0-5 to 1-3, at half-time.

Kelly had the sides level within two minutes of the restart and he added two more frees to edge Shels into a 0-9 to 1-4 lead with 15 minutes remaining.

St. Anne's rallied and moved into a 1-10 to 0-11 lead through points form Jonathan Fogarty and Diarmuid O'Keeffe. But Kelly converted his fifth placed ball before O'Shaughnessy's late effort forced a replay.
