Andy Smith agrees with Galway manager Anthony Cunningham that the advantage rule should be extended to hurling.

The rule has already been introduced in football and would certainly have benefited the Tribesmen in the closing stages of Sunday's league semi-final against Kilkenny when Jonathan Glynn was called back for a free as he bore down on goal.

"In fairness to James McGrath, he did a good job of the game and he's one of the few refs who let the game flow and develop as a contest, which does no harm at all," Smith comments in The Irish Daily Mirror.

"That's the way hurling should be played. The stop-starting is no good for anyone. The advantage rule would definitely help speed up the game and make it a better contest.

"It would be a help if the game is ruled right, refereed right, and I think it is something that should be looked into a bit more.

"If referees blow every time there is a slap of a hurl or anything, that's no good for anyone. Hurling is a fantastic game and it should be let play the way spectators want to see it, as well as us."
