best team won today but i have never seen so many mistakes from portumna
soft scores conceded misplaced handpasses wrong options in attack
the goal
after ten minutes you could sense something wrong
lot of lads stuck to the ground
they are a far better team than they showed today and have taken club hurlin to a new level
lets hope they are still good for a couple more All Irelands

lads we also lost by a point to roscommon, so its a connacht final NOT involving mayo or galway when was the last time that happened?

I agree with all of those comments. No doubt you have stated where we are at now. The question is how did we get to this dreadful state and how did we get out of it.
Are the football board to blame. They have all but smothered U16 Tedd Webb teams. No funding, no gear, no food, no training, political appointments to manage and coach teams. U15 and U 14 development is a shambles. Badly managed, badly implemented, not funded and no progression path forward into county teams.

So if if it is bad at the roots then how can it grow?

Dreadful stuff today. A lot of those players are going seriously backwards. In all honesty two poor teams. The Sligo Full-Forward was the main player you'd pick out on their side.Conroy, Kelly (before being sent off) and Doherty in patches and Gaffney when he came on did ok for Galway but it was desperate stuff.

Galway football is in crisis, no doubt about it.Don't know where we can go from here really.

How can you say athenry are a better team. Portumna are the first club ever to reach three all Ireland finals in a row. Got bet today by a team who were sharper. Portumna fell behind in the birr game two years ago. Also does it not show a better team who take control of thegame from the start. Athenry nor sarsfields ever managed 4 finals in 5 years. Portumna are not finished yet. People said they were gone when they lost to dunloy in 2003, when they lost to loughrea in 2006 and they will be back stronger and better. Athenry and sarsfields couldn't even win the county tital after the two in a row. Give credit where credit I'd due.

Galway underage football is in a sorry state right now. Our teams are even struggling to reach Connacht finals in recent years and we are no better than Leitrim now at underage level. How can a team containing 9 All-Ireland minor winners lose at home to Sligo? There is obviously big problems in the system within the county and Alan Mulholland hinted at them when he said he's barely been able to get his hands on the players for training sessions. The results of years of neglect are coming home to roost.

Something is seriously wrong with underage football in this county. We have not won an u21 game since 2005 and for a county of this size it is truly appalling. Some serious questions will have to be asked and answered to get to the bottom of this mess.

major overhaul of development needed in galway football...we are in a serious crisis and by all accounts seem to have a poorish enough minor team where does the book stop. we have to act immediately before we fall even further behind.

I got it wrong again. Thought Portumna would shade it. Looking back at it Ballyhale had the better test in the semi final and were battle/match hardned compaired to portumnas last two victories over Loughrea and the semi final which i think they won both by double digit scores. I also was chatting to people in Galway hurling over the last two weeks and it was 60/40 for Ballyhale to shade it. One or two other signs were there that did not look good for Portumna (would be unfair to publish here) Joe Canning was excellent and i though TJ Reid did all the damage in the first half. All ballyhale had to do in the second half was not concede a goal and with joe in the half forward line that was making their task a lot easier. Still Portumna have been a great team and i am afraid though that the best club team of all time has eluded them for the moment at least. They have never really come from behind or been able to hurl their way back into games like sarsfields and Athenry have. The have always been in control of games ( not a bad sign) and have been very ruthless when ahead or on top. Looking back Athenry still top the Galway teams for their overall ability and the way they could dig themselves out of a hole with Sarsfields very near or equal to Athenry. Portumna can hold their heads high and will still be the team to beat in Galway in 2010.
