The death occurred peacefully of Patrick Craughwell, Menlough.Ballinasloe at his residence in the loving care of his family, friends, and neighbours.
Patrick (87), or Paddy as he was affectionately known, was predeceased by his wife Chrissie in 1986, son Michael 1951 and daughter Mary 1997.
Paddy was one of Menlough's best known citizens having served as sacristan in the local church for many years. In his youth he was a prominent gaelic footballer and was the winner of a connacht minor medal with Galway in 1937, and for many years played with his native Menlough and for a long number of years provided the club with a playing pitch until the latter years when they purchased their own grounds.
His remains reposed at his residence before being removed to the local St. Mary's Church and were received by Very Rev. Fr. Sean Kilbane and the burial took place at the New Cemetery after Mass of the resurrection.The concelebrants included very Rev. Fr. J. O'Gorman P.P Menlough, Rev. Fr. A. Devine, Castlebar, Rev. Fr.M. Nohilly C.C Moylough, Rev. Fr. P. Costello, Mount bellew, Rev. Fr. S. Cunningham C.C Tuam and Rev. Fr. Vincent Screene, Skehana and missionary.
Fr. O'Gorman, in the homily of the Mass, spoke of his great faith, his devotion to his work as a sacristan of the local church, his involvement in local organisations and he extended sympathy to his family. Family members participated in the readings, prayers of the faithful and offertory procession. guards of honour were formed on both days of his funeral by the adults and juveniles of the local GAA Club.
He is survived by his daughters Mrs Catherine Scanlon (Castlebar), Regina Malone (Clarinbridge), Josephine Madden (Houston, Texas), and Anita Carroll (Clonsilla, Dublin). Sons Pat (Clarinbridge), Jarlath (Menlough), brothers Michael (Menlough), Matty (Los Angeles USA) and John Joe (Kansas, USA), sister Sr. Anita L.S.U (Southampton, England), daughters-in-law, sons-in-law and grandchildren, extended family, neighbours and friends.
