The late Sean McGovern
Sean McGovern, Vice President of St Mary's GAA Club, who passed away will be sadly missed around Athenry.
A native of Galway, Sean was brought up in Bansha, Co Tipperary where his father John was a member of the Garda Siochana. His late mother was a native of Eyrecourt.
Sean was gifted sportsman winning an All-Ireland minor hurling medal with Tipperary in 1952. Later his work as a forestry official took him to different parts of the country and he represented Wicklow and Cork in football.
Sean was also an accomplished golfer in Athenry Golf Club and in his heyday played off a handicap of 9.
He settled in Athenry in 1962. Sena was a long standing and active member of the local St Vincent de Paul Society and, with his wife Mary, put many hours of voluntary work into the Community Games. At his home on the New Line there was always a Cead Mile Failte for anyone who called.
His great sporting interest was in Athenry GAA and his special involvement for over 30 years was in the development of juvenile hurling. He was involved in numerous underage successes and his pride and joy was to see so many of the young players develop into outstanding senior hurlers.
He must have derived great satisfaction from seeing his former juveniles win eight county titles and three glorious All-Ireland Club Finals during the last twenty years.
St Mary's GAA Club have extended sincere sympathy to his wife MAry and family, his extended family and many friends. He is survived by his wife Mary; son Sean (married to Eileen in New Jersey, USA); daughters Ann-Marie (married to Peter McKiernan, Dublin); Brenda (married to Sean O'Shea, Mountpelier) and Niamh (married to Colga Coy, Cahertubber). He has nine grandchildren.
Burial took place in the New Cemetery, Athenry following mass in Church of the Assumption, Athenry. Ar dheis lamh De go raibh se.
