The Late Dr Micheal Costello St Mary's Church was filled to capacity as family, friends and patients of the late Dr Michael Costello gathered to mark his passing. The popular doctor died at the age of 78 after a short illness. Described as "a man with great local knowledge", the late doctor moved to Headford in 1960, when he took over Dr Lydon's practice. Born in Skehanagh, Dr Costello was known as a keen sportsman and able footballer. He played with the UCG and combined university teams, and even got a few games with the Galway county team in the 1950s. He graduated from the University College Galway in the 1950s and worked in the Regional Hospital Galway before spending time in Africa doing missionary work. On this return to Ireland he worked as a GP in Westport before taking over the Headford practice. He treated generations of people from Headford and the surrounding areas up until his early 70s, a tradition now carried on by his sons Alan and Val. Headford County Councillor Mary Hoade praised Dr Costello's dedication to his profession. "He was a household name in Headford and touched the lives of many people in the community," she said. "His passing is a great loss to his wife, family and the community as a whole." Dr Costello is survived by his wife Laura (formerly Cummins from Ballinrobe), his children Nigel, Alan, Val, Elizabeth, Louise and Morgan, extended family and many friends.
