Galway forward Joseph Cooney believes that it is the small details that helped the Tribesmen win their first All-Ireland title since 1988.

Cooney was an integral part of the side that defeated Waterford in the decider last Sunday and he stressed to the Connacht Tribune that it was far more from 1 to 15 that won the title.

In a novel scenario, Galway togged out every man on the panel even though Croke Park only allows 26 on match days, but on this occasion, the extended panel of eight each wore the number 27 on their jersey.

And Cooney was in no doubt that this lifted the side ahead of the game as they went on to produce an excellent performance on the day.

"From 27 to 35 won the All-Ireland for us," stressed Cooney. "Huge credit to Micheal (Donoghue) and the lads, I was delighted before the match started to see all of those lads getting to come out for the team photo with jerseys on, fully togged.

"That's a huge mantra for me in the GAA. I've never experienced that before with previous management teams and I suppose that's what we brought. We were in a bubble, 35 of us, all going in one direction. Only for that I don't think we would have got over the line. It was just a massive group effort."
