Philip Mahony says Waterford's hurlers are a free-spirited group who like to express themselves on the field of play.

Although there's a lot of talk about the system implemented by manager Derek McGrath, key defender Mahony points out that the All-Ireland finalists are not a team of robots:

"Some people may have the impression that as a group we are robotic in the way we play and we're told what to do every time we go in training or on the field but, I can tell you, it's the complete opposite," he told The Irish Independent.

"We're a very free-spirited group and you have to enjoy it. We've waited long enough to get into a final that you just can't block yourself away from that. We'll keep doing what we have been doing since the Cork game. You take it day by day and that's literally what we've done.

"It might sound simple but Derek just tells us to go out and express ourselves and try and attack everything and not to be worrying. We've been through a lot of things as a group both collectively and individually so it puts things in perspective and we were able to go out there and play with no fear.

"We're delighted after the way we performed in June. Cork blew us away that day. We just took it day by day, step by step from there and have ended up in an All-Ireland final."
