A lifelong Galway hurling fan won't be supporting the team this year in frustration at what he perceives is a lack of pride in the county jersey.

Richard Conneely, who has been living in Donegal for over 30 years, wrote a letter to this week's Connacht Tribune expressing his disappointment with the players for forcing Anthony Cunningham to step down as manager after last year's All-Ireland final.

"I have flown the flag for Galway hurling and football in the outpost of Donegal, until now. I have been at every final involving Galway, 85-86 loss, 87-88 win. Players and management stuck with the coach then!

"All that is asked is that they give their best. A team has to have leaders. In 2015, I saw no leaders on the pitch.

"Leaders stand up when the pressure is on. It was not the manager that lost the final, but the players on the pitch. Since then, they have questioned the manager and where are they today - relegated, a team with no backbone.

"Moore's Almanac says Galway will win the hurling this year. He has to get it right sometime! But I will not be present. I say good luck to them."
