Irish soccer legend in awe of Joe

Irish soccer legend Niall Quinn says he would pay to see Joe Canning play every week.

Quinn is hoping for a Tipperary victory against Canning's Galway in tomorrow's All-Ireland SHC semi-final, with both of his parents hailing from Thurles and his mother's brothers having played for the Premier County in the past. He knows, however, that Eamon O'Shea's men will have to curtail the influence of the Portumna sharpshooter if they are to meet Kilkenny again in next month's final.

"I hope Tipp win obviously for family reasons, but Kilkenny are going to be incredibly hard to beat - whoever wins this match on Sunday," Quinn said in today's Irish Daily Star.

"I've kind of gone very neutral in my retirement from football in lots of way. But I watch Joe Canning and I think he is the most beautiful hurler I have seen in my life - and I have seen a lot of good ones.

"That's not a statement I would make easily, but I'm kind of afraid that he will turn it on.

"Galway have other good players but that fellow, it's an old cliché but I would pay to see him play every week."
