The Galway SHC has been hit by a fresh controversy.
This evening's scheduled clash of Athenry and Ardrahan didn't go ahead after the former refused to play because one of their players was selected to play for a Galway inter-county team in recent days. Athenry have appealed the decision by the Galway CCC not to agree to a postponment.
A statement from Galway hurling committee read: "St Mary's hurling club (Athenry) have informed the secretary of the hurling committee that they will not be playing their SHC game v Ardrahan fixed for Loughrea at 5.00pm today.
"Therefore game will not be going ahead this evening."
Last night, former kingpins Portumna overcame Mullagh 2-19 to 2-12. In today's games, meanwhile, Loughrea were 1-10 to 0-10 winners over Beagh, while St. Thomas' and Killimordaly drew 0-13 to 2-7.
